Iris Clinical Decision Support
Iris is a Clinical Decision Support tool developed by OMS to enable the OPCMH model of care. Iris substantially improves the quality of physician-patient interactions by maximizing "time and touch" opportunities, eliminating clinically irrelevant activities, and ensuring physicians have all the information they need at the point of care on a single scrollable page.
Oncology EMRs collect and store data in structured fields to enable sorting and reporting for users. However, physicians must review data from dozens of screens within the EMR in order to understand a patient’s condition, review prior treatment and medical care, determine the essential issues to deal with on a given day and plan future treatment schedules.
Iris is an EMR enhancement that gathers data from these various screens and presents it in a logical and longitudinal view; thus, turning data into actionable information for the physician to rapidly assess a patient's most important issues to which to attend during a given visit.
Our aim with Iris was to create a powerful tool that could adapt to a physician's workflow—rather than the other way around, which is common of all EMRs. By focusing on clinically relevant activities and measuring performance across a range of key indicators, Iris substantially improves the quality of care delivered to patients and the quality of life for physicians and care teams.

Unique capabilities
(not available in EHRs)
-
Data Presentation – pulling from various data elements within the EMR, relevant clinical information is displayed in a single logical and longitudinal view at the point of care.
-
Document Generation – essential elements from this document viewer are included in the final Progress Note physicians generated either through voice recognition or keystroke option.
-
Document Dissemination – Progress notes are available to care team members both in and outside of the practice within 15 minutes of document completion through auto-fax or physician portal.
-
Symptom Management – standardized patient and nursing assessment tools are used to generate patient Performance Status (ECOG or Karnofsky). Performance Status and changes in Performance Status prompt physicians to modify the plan of care, including end-of-life discussions.
-
Test and Referral Tracking – appointments for tests or other physician visits are scheduled by the practice, recorded and tracked in IRIS. In addition, missed appointments generate a call to the patient to reschedule the appointment or determine if a patient is in distress, and as necessary, involve a triage nurse to manage acute symptoms.
